Janet Rita Emerson Bashen was born in Mansfield, Ohio, on February 12, 1957. Her father, James Lucker Emerson Sr., worked as a city garbage collector, and her mother, Ola Mae Emerson (1937-2014), was a licensed nurse at the Huntsville Hospital, becoming the first African American nurse in the emergency room department (Wikipedia, 2023).
