Janet Rita Emerson Bashen
Early Life and Education:
Janet Rita Emerson Bashen was born in Mansfield, Ohio, on February 12, 1957. Her father, James Lucker Emerson Sr., worked as a city garbage collector, and her mother, Ola Mae Emerson (1937-2014), was a licensed nurse at the Huntsville Hospital, becoming the first African American nurse in the emergency room department (Wikipedia, 2023). This upbringing instilled in Bashen a strong work ethic and a dedication to advocating for equal opportunities.
Following her high school education, Bashen attended Alabama A&M University, a historically Black college and university. Although she did not finish her degree at Alabama A&M, she later enrolled at the University of Houston, earning a degree in Legal Studies and Government (Bashen Corp., 2023). Software Innovation: Bashen's most notable accomplishment is the invention of LinkLine, a web-based software application designed to handle Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) investigations and claims tracking (Wikipedia, 2023). Launched in 2001, LinkLine was later rebranded as Nalikah. This software revolutionized how companies manage EEO cases, streamlining processes and ensuring compliance with regulations.
Bashen's invention earned her recognition as the first African American woman to patent a web-based software application (Wikipedia, 2023). This landmark achievement inspires aspiring female entrepreneurs and innovators, particularly within the STEM fields.
Beyond Software: Bashen's passion extends beyond software development.
