Marvin Ellison has more than 35 years of retail leadership and operational experience. He is currently at the helm of Lowe’s, a FORTUNE® 50 home improvement company with over 1,700 stores and approximately 300,000 associates in the United States1.
Notably, he is the only African American to have served as Chairman and CEO of two Fortune 500 companies. Prior to joining Lowe’s, Marvin held the position of Chairman and CEO at J.C. Penney Co., where he achieved positive sales growth, reduced debt, and generated positive adjusted earnings per share1.
His extensive experience in the home improvement industry includes 12 years in senior-level operations roles with The Home Depot. During his tenure there, he significantly improved customer service and efficiency across the organization. As the Executive Vice President of U.S. stores, he oversaw U.S. sales, operations, installation services, tool rental, and pro strategic initiatives1.
Before Home Depot, Marvin spent 15 years at Target Corp., where he held various operational and leadership roles1.
He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from The University of Memphis, where he currently serves on the board of trustees. Additionally, he holds an MBA from Emory University1.
Marvin also serves on the board of directors for FedEx Corporation1.
His professional and civic leadership has earned him accolades, including multiple appearances on Barron’s annual list of “Top CEOs”, inclusion on Fortune’s “Most Inspirational CEOs” and “World’s Greatest Leaders” lists, and being named “Father of the Year” by the National Father’s Day Council. In 2023, he received the National Retail Federation’s Visionary Award1.
